Default Problem Setting up Remote Desktop over WAN

I've got RD working fine on the LAN, but over WAN not so much.
    Here's what I've done.

Got the public IP a OK
port forwarded either port 443 or 3398....saw two different recommendations on Microsoft articles about where RD is listening.

Using the Iphone app tried entering the gateway as either
public IP: port 443 or 3398
    neither work.....
    tried entering the gateway as
http:// public IPort but it didn't like the http://
Also in the router I chose TCP as the protocol.

RD on my Iphone is not finding the computer its not a log in problem its a "I can't find your computer" problem.
Using Microsoft Defender and checked the Firewall which is allowing RD two way communication.

    What m I doing wrong????
    thanks

I'm afraid I don't know anything about RD since I gave up on it many years ago. I'd be starting from scratch. There are loads of free TeamViewer alternatives out there, maybe one of them would work better?

I only use TeamViewer so I have no recent experience with others. Years ago I used VNC now called UltraVNC. It was crude and required the same port forwarding etc like Remote Desktop. Supposedly Chrome has its own remote desktop. There's LogMeIn, RemotePC...

OK so for those looking for an alternative to Teamviewer, the Chrome Remote desk top is a dream. Talk about easy to setup, my goodness you need not know anything about
port forwarding servers nadda its cake.
I highly recommend it, and yes it works very very well over the internet. I have the app on my Iphone too, but you can run it from a desktop too.
