Default Windows MUI error after weather unsafe [solved]

[edit: Find the solution in this message later in the thread.]

    Hello Bob,

Most of the time after a weather alert is issued to close the observatory I get a script error in ACP.
The observatory is closed and safe , dome closed and parked,
we had a spike of humidity yesterday at 00:17:49 and weather unsafe was issued and dome closed.
Is it a normal behaviour ? telesocpe and CCD stays on and cooled (which is ok if observatory would need to be reopen after)
Here is part of the log :

Default script error after weather unsafe

Hello -- this is an error in handling an error. The MUI issue relates to something being wrong with the "multi-language user interface" (MUI) in Windows. Is this maybe an old XP system. I haven't seen MUI errors for many many years.

The original error I don't know because the error message is being masked by the MUI error. It has something to do with a problem acquiring an image or it may be resulting from having the AcquireImages script interrupted by the weather unsafe. In any case, the normal response is being confused by the MUI problem I think...

PS: It is much easier for me if the log is just attached rather than pasted.

    Hello Bob,
no this is a new Win7 machine for our TRAPPIST-North telescope but with a French version of Windows
    maybe the issue ?
note that I have the same problem in chile using an old XP in french too, but going to be upgraded soon.
I have had always this issue and I tought it would be solved with the new computer in the new observatory.
    cheers
    ej

I did some research, and the MUI error appears to come from having Windows Script installed without the "Multi-Language User Interface" (MUI) option. Since Windows Script is built into the OS< I am surprised that your French systems don't have this present. From where are you getting your Windows OS disks or installations? Is this a "special" build pof Windows (configured by maybe an IT department and not directly from Microsoft)?

    Dear Bob,

As discussed in private with Emmanuel, we have exactly the same issue: our computer crashed and we changed it to a powerful Dell station under Win7 64 bit. I draw your attention that it is an English version to avoid the problems of languages. Unfortunately we have also a MUI issue when we try to submit an observation trough the Web page. It is then not a problem associated to the langage and a rapid scan shows that it can happen to any type of PC.

This problem seems to be very difficult to solve and we (me and the computer team of the lab which is really competent) have already spend a huge amount of time to solve this issue, which prevents any observation on our telescope. This situation is then very difficult as our observations are now stopped!

Before buying a new machine (I am not really not motivated by this option: it is the taxpayers' money and we have to take care of it!), we will make new tests newt Monday. One option is to switch to Win8 or Win10. It seems that you are not really enthusiast with Win10. What about Win8? Any advice will be of course welcome.

    Regards,
    Stéphane

Win7 is the best. The MUI issue is, as you found, widespread! It seems to relate to incomplete installation of the Multi-Language features of the Windows OS. See if it is possible to fix your Win7 rather than dumping the the whole OS. What language packs are available on your OS? Could you install another one maybe and get the missing MUI components. Maybe reinstall French or German or ???

The issue is that we already did all these tests (reinstall Win7, install French, etc.). It is really a nightmare...

So, if there are doubts about the other systems (please, can you give a frank analysis of them?), our room for maneuver becomes very reduced and we will stop to waste our time on a non-rational problem (it explains why I don't like Windows...).

I looked at the internet/Google again and there are endless posts about this MUI issue. I'm OK with Windows 7 or 8. But until Microsoft has stopped breaking many programs with Windows 10 updates, and they make it easier to stop Windows 10 updating in the night (!!!), I would not recommend Windows 10.

It is also our analysis of the situation: this problem is chaotic and very difficult to solve. Today I just thought of one last chance to keep Win7: I have virtual machines simulating the interface for students and they are working perfectly. For that I used another DVD installation coming from HP to install the system. I will use these second DVD to install the system again. We never know...

Thank you very much for this confirmation and in case of despair (and we're almost there), we will try with Win8.

Of course, I will let you know the end of the story!

Oh! I never considered the source of the Windows installation disk. Was the problem system installed from a Microsoft branded DVD?
